IDENTITY STRETCH
This blog post reflects similar thoughts and concepts behind my sculpture ' Identity Stretch' 2024.
We are so complex. We carry around multiple versions of ourselves in the present moment and unlimited potential for future versions. All of these versions are hijacked by our past versions and other people's past versions. It is all very multiverse.
We all have roles to play to get us through our daily existence. None of us can avoid this. If we were always 100% ourselves and never had to perform, would we get anything done? Do we need to get anything done? What is true human nature if we remove the constraints of these pre-defined roles and identities?
Today, in 2024, the good thing is that we have the knowledge and willpower to choose who we are. We can forge any pathway we like. This is coming from the notion that you're a white middle-class/upper-class person living in London. Trust me—I know how negative and evangelistic the 'Think yourself to success' can be.
But we could change the meaning of success to something different.
My definition of success is
'Living your life on your terms'
See how there is no mention of frame, fortune, or comparison to anyone else.
We are all in charge of our definitions of success and who we want to be, emotionally and communally.
I define communal success as someone who can empathise, negotiate, and find the middle ground to serve all parties involved. This can be extremely hard to navigate, but I genuinely believe if we all had each person we were dealing with's best interest at heart—and they did too—there is nothing that cannot be solved.
